Northeast Ecological Corridor

The Northeast Ecological Corridor is a tract of over 3,000 cuerdas (1 cuerda = .97 acre)that are owned by private individuals and government agencies, and are the last remnants of pristene ecosystem left on the north coast of Puerto Rico. They are a natural part of the habitat of El Yunque, the National Rain Forest Reserve, from which many small rivers that crisscross the land originate. For over ten years, small groups of activits, including surfers, local communities, and non-profit NGO's have fought for the preservation of this land.

In 2007, the governor of Puerto Rico, Anibal Acevedo Vila, signed a procamation making the area a reserve, but that has not been followed up by the laws needed to sustain its demarcation, and there are strong forces against it in the legislature and in powerful lobbies. For now, two large mega-resort developments have been stopped, but activists feel that until legal regulations safeguard the area, its security will be in hock.
